Industrial Development and Capital Advisory
Italvolt — Italy ~45 GWh Gigafactory

VOASTRA Advisory Engagement with Italvolt
Engagement Overview
VOASTRA advised Italvolt during the early development phase of its proposed lithium-ion battery gigafactory project in Italy. The project was positioned as a strategic industrial initiative aligned with European energy-transition objectives and domestic manufacturing capability.
VOASTRA’s mandate covered capital markets strategy, financial analysis and valuation, stakeholder engagement, government grant strategy, site development considerations, and organizational structure during the project’s formative stage.
Project Snapshot (Indicative)
Location: Scarmagno, Piedmont, Italy (former Olivetti industrial site)
Project Type: Lithium-ion battery gigafactory
Planned Capacity: ~45 GWh per annum (initial phase)
Italvolt’s planned gigafactory was conceived as one of Europe’s largest battery cell manufacturing facilities, targeting an initial capacity of ~45 GWh annually, sufficient to support production for roughly 550,000 electric vehicles per year, with the option to expand toward ~70 GWh in later phases. The project involved a total investment of €3.4 billion for the initial development phase on the 1 million m² site.
Production Concept
-
Phased, scalable automated cell manufacturing
-
Integration with advanced production systems
Target Markets
-
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
-
Stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Investment Profile
Large-scale industrial infrastructure project with phased CAPEX deployment. Significant employment potential and regional economic impact.
Strategic Advisory
From the outset, Italvolt’s founder demonstrated a strong understanding of capital discipline and execution realism. VOASTRA supported the development of a strategy centered on lean organizational design, low upfront CAPEX, and asset-light structures, including leasing of real estate and technology where feasible.
A key element of the advisory work involved public-sector and municipal alignment, with a focus on job creation, infrastructure readiness, and long-term regional development. VOASTRA supported engagement with national and local stakeholders, including the municipality of Scarmagno, to align the project with government priorities and potential grant frameworks.
Site Strategy and Project Status
Initial development efforts focused on the Scarmagno site, where detailed analysis identified that full demolition and remediation of existing industrial structures would be required. This materially increased upfront CAPEX and introduced uncertainty around site-preparation responsibilities between public and private stakeholders.
While discussions regarding site readiness and cost allocation were ongoing, VOASTRA supported the evaluation of alternative locations, including an existing automotive manufacturing site in Sicily, where partial refurbishment could enable a more capital-efficient development pathway.
As market sentiment toward new gigafactory developments shifted, driven by broader sector challenges and heightened policy caution, the Italvolt project was placed on hold. The founder and key stakeholders remain engaged, and VOASTRA continues to support the project as conditions evolve.
